Angus Pretty is a collector of landrace cannabis seed and the founder of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC's blog calls him Angus.[2]
Between August 2023 and September 2026 he gave seed to the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture. He is the source of 190 cannabis accessions in its database, GRIN-Global.[3] His donor notes give the places and seasons of his own collections in Pakistan, Thailand, India, Laos and Nepal between 2007 and 2024.
Collecting
RSC's blog places the first plant-hunting trip for its website in Pakistan in 2007.[4] A later post describes the trip, from Peshawar to the Yarkhun and Laspur valleys of Upper Chitral.[5] His donor note for the Mazar-i-Sharif lot dates its collection to May 2007, when he bought the original seed in Peshawar from an Afghan merchant.[6]
His donor notes for later lots name the places and seasons in which he collected them:
- Northern Thailand: Mae Hong Son Province, winter 2008 (Highland Thai).[7]
- South India: Thekkady in Kerala, 2015 (Kerala).[8]
- Central Laos: Bolikhamsai, from about 2019 to winter 2023 (Highland Lao #1 to #5). Each of the five lots came from a different farmer or household.[9][10]
- Northern Laos: Luang Namtha Province, 2021 and 2022 (Mango Thai and Mango Thai #2).[11][12]
- Western Nepal: Jumla District in winter 2021 and Lower Dolpo in November 2021, both in Karnali Province (Jumla and Dolpa).[13][14]
- Eastern India: Odisha, from the harvest of winter 2023–24 (Odisha #1 and #2).[15]
RSC's blog also credits him with a ganja landrace from Bokeo in north-western Laos.[16]
The Real Seed Company
RSC dates its trading to 2007.[1] Its FAQ says that it offers feminised seed through a second shop, Kwik Seeds.[17] The donor narrative of a Cinderella 99 lot in GRIN-Global is a description that Pretty wrote for the Kwik Seeds website.[18]
Gifts to the National Plant Germplasm System
The seed went to the system's Northeast Regional Plant Introduction Station. The first consignment arrived on 22 August 2023 and became accessions G 33678 to G 33772, 95 in all.[3][19][20] A second arrived on 25 July 2024 (G 33861 to G 33897, 37 accessions) and a third on 3 August 2026 (G 34089 to G 34133, 45 accessions).[21][22][23] The other 13 arrived in smaller lots between 27 August 2024 and 22 September 2026.[3][24][25] RSC's blog says that the company gave more than 140 of the accessions, most of them from Central, South and Southeast Asia.[26]
His donor notes name other collectors for some lots: Lucas Strazzeri for lots taken from fields around Balkh and Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan in 2018,[27] and Sascha Eckstein for lots from Chitral in 2019.[28] The Highland Thai and Kerala seed came from maintenance grows outside their place of origin.[7][8] So did the Mazar-i-Sharif seed, several generations removed from the 2007 batch, which a hobbyist has kept going indoors since then.[6] The 2023 consignment also held modern cultivars such as Cinderella 99.[18]
Curator notes say that lots of the 2023 consignment were included, or attempted, in the 2024 genome sequencing and phenotyping trial of the USDA-ARS Hemp Germplasm Laboratory and HudsonAlpha.[8][29]
Views on landraces
On the Curious About Cannabis podcast in 2020, Pretty discussed the classification of high-THC cannabis that John McPartland and Ernest Small had published that year.[30] When the full episode was made freely available in 2023, he wrote that his ideas had changed since the recording. He objected to the classification's placing of all Himalayan cannabis in the wild-type var. himalayensis. In his view the cultivated Himalayan crops are multipurpose landraces with large seeds, high bast-fibre content and high resin production.[31]
In the same post he argued that the farmers who grow landraces in Laos, the Himalaya and Afghanistan are socially, economically and geographically isolated. In his account this isolation keeps their crops free of modern hybrids, outside drug-tourism areas such as the Parvati and Kullu valleys and Cambodia. He added that the effect was weakening with internet commerce and with legal change in countries such as Thailand.[31]
Interviews and podcasts
- Grassyou.com, July 2019, published on landrace.blog.[32]
- Curious About Cannabis, with its host Jason: a conversation of nearly three hours on landraces, released in December 2019,[33] and the 2020 episode on the McPartland and Small classification.[30]
- CANNAMANtv, with Conor: a three-part episode on cannabis and alchemy in August 2022,[34] and an episode on landraces, their preservation and hybrids in May 2024.[2]
- Breeders Syndicate, November 2024.[35]
- The Aussie Gunja Project, December 2024.[36]
He has also written for landrace.blog. A post there in September 2019 took ten claims about landraces from the first page of Google results and set out why he considered them false.[37]
