Balkhi General Population 2019 is a landrace cannabis accession from Balkh Province, Afghanistan, listed as Balkhi in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC classifies it as an Afghan landrace.[1]
Geography
RSC describes Balkh as the hashish heartland of northern Afghanistan and a crucial centre of cannabis culture and biodiversity. It gives the latitude of the source area as about 36° N.[1]
Collection Details
RSC gives the sourcing as Landrace Genetics, Balkh, northern Afghanistan (2019).[1] The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[2] dates the sourcing to 2018.[3]
RSC distinguishes the accession from the larger north Afghan landrace that, it says, Afghans themselves call Mazar-i-Sharif.[1] The Kwik Seeds listing describes that strain as very large and as the one RSC sells under the name Mazar-i-Sharif.[3]
Cultivation Details
RSC gives the purpose as sieved charas. It gives the harvest as October and lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing.[1]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC describes a resinous, heavily branched landrace of semi-dwarf habit, often with an almost spherical architecture.[1] It gives a height of about 2 metres and medium to broad leaflets. The Kwik Seeds listing gives a height of 1 to 3 metres and a medium leaflet width. It classifies the line as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica.[3]
Versions of the RSC listing from 2020 and early 2021 gave a height of 1 to 3 metres and said that leaflet width varies from broad to narrow.[4] In 2020 the listing classified the line as C. sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica × C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica.[4] By August 2021 it had put the second parent in brackets with a question mark.[5]
RSC expects the population, like other charas landraces, to include chemotypes ranging from THC-dominant to CBD-dominant, as well as other cannabinoids such as THCV.[1]
Aroma
RSC describes intense aromas ranging from citrus and lime to pine, sandalwood and burnt rubber.[1]
Notes
In 2020 the listing also said that northern Afghan landraces cannot easily be categorised according to "Western preconceptions" of Indica- and Sativa-type strains.[4]
