Lao Gold General Population 2026 is a landrace cannabis accession from southern Laos, listed as Lao Gold in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC classifies it as a traditional Lao-Thai cannabis landrace grown for ganja.[1]

Geography

RSC describes the line as a classic Lao cannabis landrace from southern Laos, a region it calls the source of some of the finest of each season's "Thai", the golden seedless ganja known to long-term expatriates in Thailand. It gives a latitude of about 16.5° N.[1] The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[2] describes the region as arguably the most highly regarded cultivation centre of southern Laos, which was RSC's own wording from August 2020 to April 2021.[3]

History

According to RSC, cannabis cultivation in Laos and neighbouring Isan belongs to no single ethnic group, but among the communities best known for producing first-class ganja in areas such as Sakon Nakhon in northeastern Thailand and Savannakhet in Laos are the Phu Thai. RSC writes that prohibition has had only minimal effect on traditional ganja culture in Laos, unlike in northern Isan, and that until very recently plants were a conspicuous feature of most gardens in Phu Thai villages.[1][3] RSC recommends the line to those seeking to recreate the Thai stick of old.[1] It files the line under its Southeast Asia category, which describes the finest Thai stick of the 1960s and 1970s as coming from northern Isan and neighbouring central Laos.[4]

Collection Details

The listing gives the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Laos, Southeast Asia (2026), and Kwik Seeds gives the same.[1][3] Neither listing names a province, a village or a farmer. When RSC brought in the 2023 harvest of the line, it reported that the new seed came from the same farmer as before.[5]

Cultivation Details

RSC gives the purpose as ganja, which it glosses as seedless or lightly seeded buds, and the regional growing period as about five to six months from seed to harvest. It reports that the best of each year's crop is sown around August to September and harvested from February to March, so that flowers receive little rain and ripen in the dry, sunny weather at the start of the hot season. It lists greenhouse or outdoor growing.[1] Kwik Seeds gives the regional harvest as late December to early January, which was RSC's own line until August 2024.[3]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC gives a height of about 2 metres and describes rich, musky spice and an intense high.[1] Kwik Seeds adds Sativa-type architecture to the same characteristics line.[3] RSC reports that aroma varies from plant to plant within the landrace and that potency runs from moderate to intense, with powerful aromas ranging from rich cigars through musky spice to sweet citrus. It quotes one grower who compares the high to Jack Herer with less of a come-down.[1]

RSC quotes a grower who worked with the line indoors and reported strong musk and spice, with scents ranging from floral and almost vanilla to buckskin, hardwood and sun-cured Turkish tobacco. The same grower reports subtler scents of very ripe banana, carrot tops, white chocolate, fresh cream and calamus leaves. The same grower describes the plants as the compact "lowland type" with bigger buds, and the leaflets at the top of the plant as among the narrowest he had seen, narrower than those of RSC's Kerala accession (Kerala Reproduction 2015) and thickening to a moderate width lower down. He reports no sign of Southeast Asian hemp influence and cautions against claims that the line has been crossed with an Indica. RSC adds a second description of musky vanilla, cacao butter and spices.[1]
