Mazar-i-Sharif #2 General Population 2022 is a landrace cannabis accession from Balkh Province, Afghanistan, listed as Mazar-i-Sharif #2 in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC describes it as an Indica landrace sourced from a farmer who produces hashish in rural Balkh Province, outside the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.[1] The line is on sale at RSC and on its Kwik Seeds site (checked 27 October 2026).[1][2]
Geography
History
RSC writes that semidwarf charas landraces from the Balkh region became known in the early decades of American and Dutch underground cannabis breeding under the name Mazar-i-Sharif, the name under which smugglers sold north Afghan hashish in the 1960s and 1970s. It considers that, after some years of selection for sinsemilla in the West, the semidwarf type probably became the basis of many western Indica–Sativa hybrids, perhaps including Skunk #1, and notes that the pedigree of Skunk is much disputed.[1] RSC adds that Afghan farmers themselves give the name Mazar-i-Sharif, Mazari or Balkhi to a different, larger landrace.[1]
Collection Details
The listing gives the sourcing as "Landrace Genetics, Balkh Province, Afghanistan (2022)".[1] RSC announced the line in February 2023 among newly collected accessions from Afghanistan,[4] and the listing's earliest archived version, of March 2023, described it as newly collected and as "understood to be the very large landrace" that Afghan farmers call Mazari, Balkhi or Mazar-i-Sharif.[5] From January 2025 the listing describes it as a semidwarf type and the larger landrace as a different one.[6]
In August 2023 Angus gave a packet of the seed to the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, which holds it as accession G 33741 at its Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York.[7][8]
Cultivation Details
RSC gives the purpose as charas (sieved resin) and the harvest as October. It reports good germination rates, of about 100 per cent, reconfirmed in summer 2025.[1] The Kwik Seeds listing, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[9] gives the harvest as October to early December and adds bhang to the purposes.[2]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC describes the plants as having the classic Indica traits of broad leaflets and a semidwarf, bushy architecture.[1] It names this accession and Nangarhar as the two RSC accessions that can show particularly strong Indica morphology.[3] The listing's photograph shows plants of the accession outdoors at about 40° N in mid-July.[1]
