Tirah General Population 2022 is a landrace cannabis accession from Tirah, a hashish-producing area in the mountains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on the border with Afghanistan, sold as Tirah in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC) from December 2022 to January 2025.[1][2] RSC described it as an authentic Hindu Kush domesticate of the 2022 harvest from the Tirah Valley, a renowned centre of hashish production in northwest Pakistan.[1] The lot is no longer on sale: since May 2025 the listing has sold seed of the 2024 harvest (RSC-PAK-KHY-0120240001).[3]
Geography
RSC gave a latitude of 33° N. It placed the Tirah Valley in a region once known as the Tribal Agencies, a mountainous and ethnically Pashtun area beyond the direct control of the Pakistani government, and writes that the valley cuts through the Orakzai, Kurram and Khyber agencies.[1] RSC later added that Tirah lies at the interface of Central and South Asia.[2]
History
According to RSC, the valley is a major centre of cannabis cultivation, best known for Tirah garda, a refined form of hashish with a potent, narcotic effect, usually blonde or golden, which darkens and "melts" with age.[1] RSC wrote that the Internet was already bringing modern hybrid seed to Pakistan in a big way, as was also happening across India.[1]
Collection Details
The listing gave the sourcing as "Landrace Genetics, Tirah Valley, Hindu Kush, 2022 Harvest" from December 2022 to January 2025.[1][2] It named no village or farmer.[1]
In August 2023 Angus gave seed of Tirah to the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, which holds it as accession G 33766 at its Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York. The donor describes it as a charas landrace.[4][5]
Cultivation Details
RSC gave the purpose as charas (sieved resin) and the harvest as late September to early November, and listed outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing. It wrote that the seeds had been tested and showed germination rates well above the acceptable minimum of 80 per cent.[1]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC described resinous, quite early maturing plants with a narcotic effect and aromas of coffee, hazelnut, hash, citrus, kush and earthy musk, and wrote that Tirah crops range from short, heavily branched Indica-type plants with relatively broad leaflets to Sativa-type variants, like the "Khyber Sativa" strain of old seedbank catalogues.[1] From September 2024 it added gasoline to the aromas, wrote that the plants vary greatly in aroma from one to the next, from gasoline to skunk, candy or mandarin, and gave a height of about 2 metres and mostly broad leaflets.[2]
