Nanda Devi General Population 2019 is a landrace cannabis accession from the Kumaon Himalaya, in Uttarakhand, India, sold as Nanda Devi in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC) from November 2019 to January 2022.[1][2] RSC described it as a specialised charas cultigen unique to a few remote villages of northern Kumaon to the east of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.[1] The lot is no longer on sale: the listing has since sold seed of the 2021 harvest (RSC-IND-UTT-0120210001) and of winter 2024 (RSC-IND-UTT-0120240002).[3]

Geography

RSC placed the strain in a few remote villages of northern Kumaon to the east of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, and gave a latitude of 29° N.[1]

History

RSC wrote that, unlike typical multipurpose Himalayan landraces, the strain is not grown for fibre or seed but is used by farmers only for charas, and that its charas has a better, stronger high than that of the distinct large-seeded strains, known as dati, which the same villages also grow. It described the traditional braided charas the strain produces as somewhat harder and coarser than the typical Parvati type.[1]

Collection Details

In November 2019 the listing gave the sourcing as "Personally collected at source in Kumaon"; from August 2020 to January 2022 it gave "The Real Seed Company, Kumaon Himalaya, 2019 Harvest".[1][4][2]

Cultivation Details

RSC gave the purpose as charas (hand-rubbed resin), the harvest as mid-August to mid-September, during breaks in the monsoon rains, and greenhouse or outdoor growing. It called the strain unusually fast-flowering for a Himalayan landrace.[1] From August 2020 the listing reported that a horticulturist running a licensed grow had reached germination rates above 85 per cent with this accession, and quoted a cultivator who wrote that about a quarter of the seeds sprout quickly, about half take up to four weeks or more, and the rest are unpredictable.[4] From September 2021 it added a report of seedlings emerging a year after an outdoor grow, which RSC took to confirm a strong wild-type component in the strain.[5]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC gave a height of 2 to 4 metres outdoors, later 2 to 5 metres, and described highly resinous, aromatic buds with floral, tangy, herbal and spicy aromas. It described the high as intense and soaring, evening out into a long-lasting buzz, and listed the strain as early maturing, hardy and tolerant of humidity.[1][4] From August 2020 RSC wrote that wild-type traits of var. himalayensis appear more pronounced in this cultigen than in multipurpose types.[4]
