Mekong General Population 2023 is a landrace cannabis accession from Vientiane Province, Laos, sold as Mekong in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC) from October 2023 to October 2024.[1][2] RSC described it as a ganja landrace obtained from a Lao village household in the rice-growing lowlands of the province.[1] The lot is no longer on sale: since February 2025 the same listing, retitled Mekong #2, has sold seed of 2024 (RSC-LAO-VIE-0120240001).[3]
Geography
RSC called the rice-growing lowlands of Vientiane Province, in Central Laos, a crucial centre of production of "Thai" ganja, lying across the Mekong from well-known centres of Thai stick production in northern Isan. It gave a latitude of 18° N.[1]
History
According to RSC, ganja is a traditional household crop in this part of Laos, particularly among ethnic Tai rice-farming communities of the lowlands such as the Lao, sown between June and September and harvested between December and April.[1]
Collection Details
The listing gave the sourcing as "The Real Seed Company, Laos, Southeast Asia, 2023", and said that the accession was obtained from a Lao village household that grows a stand of ganja plants each year for its own use, both in food such as chicken soup and as ganja for smoking.[1]
In July 2024, while the lot was on sale, Angus gave seed of Mekong to the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, which holds it as accession G 33880 at its Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York. The entry describes it only as a ganja landrace.[4][5]
Cultivation Details
RSC gave the purpose as ganja (seedless or lightly seeded buds), about six months from seed to harvest, and greenhouse or outdoor growing.[1]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC gave a height of 2 to 4 metres and described large, narrow-leafleted classic Sativa morphology, substantial colas and strongly scented, resinous inflorescences, with intense, rich aromas and a euphoric, luminous high.[1]
