Highland Lao #4 General Population 2022 is a landrace cannabis accession from Bolikhamsai Province, Laos, which The Real Seed Company (RSC) sold as Highland Lao #4 from May 2022.[1][2] RSC classified it as a Lao-Thai ganja landrace and wrote that the number four marked "a distinct accession from a new source".[2] It is no longer in RSC's catalogue: the web address that carried it now carries a later collection, Highland Lao #6.[3]
Geography
RSC placed the accession in the jungles and highlands of Bolikhamsai, which it calls a crucial centre of production of "Thai" ganja, and gave a latitude of about 18° N.[2] Neither RSC nor the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[4] names a district or a village.[2][5]
History
According to RSC, ganja is a traditional household plant in this region of Laos, particularly among lowland rice-farming communities of ethnic Tai such as the Lao.[2] RSC reports that commercial cultivation expanded with Western demand for Thai Stick in the late 1960s, and that it grew rapidly through the 1980s after US-driven crackdowns across the Mekong in northern Isan.[2] Kwik Seeds gives the same account but places that growth in the 1970s and 1980s.[5]
Collection Details
The listings gave the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Laos, Southeast Asia, 2022.[2][5] RSC announced the seed on 22 May 2022 as one of three new arrivals from the ganja heartlands of the Mekong, with Bokeo #2 and Central Lao, all germination tested at close to 100 per cent.[1] Kwik Seeds carried the same announcement and priced the seed from five seeds for 14 US dollars.[6]
RSC called the seed a new accession, and stated that the number four indicated a distinct accession from a new source; Kwik Seeds described it as a new accession from farmers.[2][5] Neither shop names the farmers.[2][5] RSC wrote that concern for the security of farmers and their families, together with Covid restrictions, had made travelling to the farms to sample the harvests unrealistic, and that it does not give high levels of detail in its descriptions because the quality and character of ganja varies with where and how a crop is grown.[2]
Cultivation Details
RSC gave the purpose as ganja, which it glosses as seedless or lightly seeded buds. It gave the regional growing period as six months from seed to harvest, noting that ganja is grown as a six-month crop across the tropics, and listed greenhouse or outdoor growing.[2]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC gave a height of 2 to 4 metres and a Sativa-type architecture.[2] Both shops classified the line as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. indica throughout the period in which they offered it.[2][7] RSC's genetics line read "Traditional Lao – Thai Ganja Domesticate" in the versions to March 2023 and "Lao – Thai Cannabis Landrace" from October 2023; Kwik Seeds keeps the earlier wording.[2][8][7]
RSC has published photographs of the accession grown outside Laos. Its listing for Highland Lao #7 carried a photograph from June 2025, which RSC captions as this accession growing outdoors at 40° N in mid-July; Kwik Seeds still carries it.[9][10] In July 2026 RSC published further photographs, which it describes as one of its Bolikhamsai accessions, Highland Lao #4, grown outdoors in California.[11] RSC's listing for Highland Lao #7 now gives one of these photographs as Highland Lao #7.[12] [disputed] Neither shop describes the plants of this accession as they grow in Bolikhamsai.

RSC describes intense, rich aromas.[2]
Effects
RSC describes a euphoric, luminous high.[2] Both shops give the same wording for the whole period in which they offered the accession.[13][7]
