Helmand General Population 2022 is a landrace cannabis accession from Helmand Province, Afghanistan, listed as Helmand in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC describes it as an Indica-type Afghan landrace.[1]

Geography

RSC places the collection in the Helmand region of southern Afghanistan, at a latitude of about 31° N.[1]

History

According to RSC, most cannabis cultivation in the province is recent. RSC dates its emergence to around 2008, after intensive eradication campaigns implemented by Governor Atta Muhammad Nur in Balkh Province, which it calls the traditional northern centre of charas production.[1]

Collection Details

The listing gives the sourcing as Landrace Genetics, Helmand, Afghanistan (2022). It describes the accession as newly collected directly in the Helmand region from the winter 2022 harvest.[1] RSC reports that the seed was re-tested in summer 2025 and showed germination rates of about 80 per cent. The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[2] reports good germination rates in that retest and close to 100 per cent viability in repeated tests.[3] RSC's own listing reported the repeated tests in 2023.[4] In June 2025 it offered the seed at a discount, noting that it came from the winter 2022 harvest and that its viability might have dropped below 80 per cent.[5]

The Kwik Seeds listing adds that the Mazari type is the most popular landrace among Afghan farmers, favoured by perhaps 75 per cent of them for its large yields. It therefore considers the accession highly likely to represent the strain sold as Mazar-i-Sharif or Mazar-i-Sharif #2.[3] RSC's listing made the same comparison in 2023.[4]

Cultivation Details

RSC gives the line's purpose as sieved charas and bhang.[1] It gives the harvest as October and lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing.[1]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC describes plants with a semi-dwarf architecture and Indica-type leaflets.[1] Versions of the listing from July 2024 to June 2025 described the leaflets as broad and reported customer feedback that the accession is a broad-leafleted Indica landrace.[6][5] The listing's photographs show male and female plants of the accession growing at 40° N in mid-July.[1]
