Kandahar General Population 2019 is a landrace cannabis accession collected in 2019 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, listed as Kandahar in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC). RSC classifies it as an Afghan Hindu Kush landrace. The seed RSC sells is a reproduction of this collection, grown ex situ and recorded at 2019 RSC Kandahar Reproduction. The Real Seed Company lists the line, currently out of stock, on its Kwik Seeds site (checked 17 October 2026).

Geography

RSC reports that the landrace was collected outside Kandahar and gives a latitude of about 32° N.

History

RSC describes Kandahar as an ancient centre of cannabis biodiversity and a historic centre of cannabis production long before the era of the Hippie Trail. It writes that Kandahar was exporting charas south to what are now Pakistan and India at least as early as the 19th century. According to RSC, the city became a stop on the Hippie Trail in the late 1960s, and the Brotherhood of Eternal Love began exporting hashish from there to America. RSC states that the Harvard ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes travelled to the region in 1971 at the request of the Brotherhood, and that in the deserts of the province he formed his concept of Cannabis indica as a distinct species unique to Afghanistan.

The listing gives the sourcing as Landrace Genetics, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan (2019). RSC states that the landrace was collected in 2019 and then maintained ex situ. The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site, gives the same sourcing and account.

Cultivation Details

RSC gives the purpose as charas (sieved resin) and the harvest as October. It lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing. In a powdery mildew resistance test reported on its blog in February 2025, RSC counted Kandahar among the excellent performers.

Botanical Characteristics

RSC gives a height of up to 2 metres and describes resinous plants with Indica-type leaflets. The listing describes the plants of the reproduction it sells; no description of the plants collected in 2019 is published.
