Property:Has coordinate basis

From Landrace.wiki

This property records how a coordinate was arrived at — what kind of claim the point makes. It does not record precision, and it does not record the source.

A coordinate alone cannot distinguish a point read off a police report from the seat of government of the unit an announcement applies to. Both are written as a latitude and a longitude, and once written nothing recovers the difference. This property is written in the same edit as the coordinate it describes.

This is a property of type Text.

The allowed values for this property are:

  • event site — the coordinate marks where the event physically happened, at the precision the source supports. A raid, a seizure at a named checkpoint, a crop destroyed in a named village, a ruling issued at a named courthouse.
  • administrative seat — the event is an announcement, law, order or finding that applies to a whole administrative unit, and the coordinate stands at that unit's seat of government as a proxy for the unit.
  • jurisdiction centre — the subject is an area with no seat of government in play (an island, a valley, a range), and the coordinate stands at the middle of that area.

How to read a pin

Only an event site pin asserts that something happened at that point. An administrative seat pin asserts that something applies to the unit seated there; it is honest at country or province zoom and misleading at street zoom, where a national law appears to happen at a particular junction. A jurisdiction centre pin asserts only "somewhere in this area".

What this property does not record

Precision is a separate axis and this property does not carry it. An event site pin may be a named building or it may be the middle of a city of a million people; both are event sites, and both are written as a latitude and a longitude. If that distinction needs to be queryable it belongs in a second property, not in a longer value list here. The property carries three basis values and records no precision.
