Florida police spray a marijuana field at Red Bay with paraquat
United Press International reported that on 28 August 1982 an 80-acre marijuana field at Red Bay, in the Florida panhandle, was sprayed with the herbicide paraquat under the direction of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The agency called it the first use of paraquat on a marijuana field in the United States and wrote that the spraying was meant to show South American governments that Florida practised what it urged on them. A 500-gallon spray truck did the work in about two hours. The field held an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 plants and was to be guarded until they died and were burned; one person was arrested there.
