Two Mexican contract helicopters spray paraquat on marijuana in Orange Walk District
The Reporter of Belize City wrote on 9 October 1983 that large-scale aerial spraying of paraquat in the Orange Walk, Corozal, Cayo and Toledo districts that week marked the start of the government's second offensive against marijuana. A tanker had brought 30,000 litres of the herbicide to the town of Orange Walk, where it was stored near the fire station. Two Mexican helicopters registered XC-BES and XC-BAT were spraying under contract. More than 300 Belize Defence Force soldiers had been sent to occupy the villages of the district. On 21 October Amandala reported that Orange Walk had been in a state of siege for two weeks, with four helicopters spraying paraquat every day.
