Koh Kong authorities report destroying 17 hectares of cannabis and send police to offshore islands

The Phnom Penh Post reported that local authorities in Koh Kong province had destroyed 17 hectares of cannabis so far in December 1995, and that police were being sent to offshore islands to cut down plantations. Deputy governor Pall San said he knew of at least 50 more hectares in the province and that the crop was exported to Thailand and other Asian countries. He said police had also seized about a thousand kilograms of dried cannabis and a packing machine the week before. According to Pall San, villagers had borrowed money to plant the crop, which fetched about $30 a bale locally against about $100 wholesale in Thailand.
