DEA and Georgia begin spraying marijuana with paraquat in the Chattahoochee National Forest
United Press International reported on 12 August 1983 that Georgia had agreed to begin spraying marijuana fields with paraquat that day, in a state and federal effort against marijuana in six remote areas of national forests. A Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman said that the spraying had begun in northern Georgia; its time and exact place were not disclosed. Governor Joe Frank Harris said that the sprayed areas would be guarded by state and local police for two days and the dead plants destroyed. A federal court in Atlanta later found that the DEA sprayed paraquat in the Chattahoochee National Forest on 12 August 1983. On 15 August it restrained the agency from further spraying in Georgia.
