Operation Condor against drug crops begins in Culiacán with a military parade
The historian Adela Cedillo writes that Operation Condor went into effect in Culiacán, Sinaloa, on 16 January 1977 with a military parade led by the general coordinator of its task force, Lieutenant General José Francisco Hernández Toledo. Condor was the Mexican name for the joint campaign that the DEA still called Trizo; it continued the aerial defoliation and manual eradication of drug crops, with the DEA supplying people, equipment and money. The federal attorney general's office ran the aerial defoliation programme. Condor first targeted the Golden Triangle, where more than 20,000 highlanders were said to grow 70 per cent of Mexico's marijuana and poppy, and its task force had 1,200 troops in the first phase.
