Thanjavur fishermen rescued two Sri Lankan nationals — A. Ajandhan (36) and V. Jeevanandam (51) from Talaimannar — found stranded in the sea off Maravakadu coast, clinging to diesel cans after their boat collapsed. Seven bags containing approximately 200 kg of cannabis were found floating alongside them, tied to the men. Sri Lanka granted approval to seven foreign investors, selected from 37 applicants, to legally cultivate cannabis for pharmaceutical export under a Board of Investment project. Each investor holds a six-month temporary licence, must deposit $2 million with the Central Bank, and commit a minimum $5 million investment. Cultivation will take place on 64 acres in Mirigama under STF and police security. No part of the plant may enter the domestic market. The initiative aims to boost foreign exchange earnings.  +
The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) urged the NPP government to reverse its decision to permit cannabis cultivation for medicinal and export purposes. The SLMA argued that approved medical uses internationally are limited to rare conditions, that global pharmaceutical demand for cannabis has declined since 2021 per the INCB, and that multinational cannabis companies are expanding into new markets to recover losses. The association warned that secure plantations would be "practically impossible" given existing enforcement challenges, and that increased street availability was a likely outcome. The SLMA described the policy as the "first breach of the dam" protecting Sri Lankans from widespread cannabis use, dismissing projected foreign currency inflows as insignificant compared to the $500 million in monthly expatriate remittances.  +

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu told media that cannabis has displaced traditional cash crops yaqona (kava) and dalo (taro) in parts of Fiji, citing its faster harvest cycle and higher financial returns. Tudravu identified Kadavu as a major production base and said cannabis cultivation was becoming generational among younger Fijians. He warned that Fiji was no longer simply a drug transit point and that money from cannabis was entering the legitimate economy. Tudravu called for coordinated government action and community-based alternatives to cultivation.  +
