Women clash with security forces during cannabis destruction at Melkabari, Khowai

On Thursday 20 November 2025, a joint Forest Department, police and BSF operation at Melkabari under Baijalbari Police Station area, Khowai district, destroyed approximately 4,000 mature cannabis plants by burning across roughly five kanis (~2 acres) of government forest land. Officials estimated each mature plant at over one kilogram of dried ganja. After the destruction, a group of local women allegedly armed with sticks and rods attacked the security team. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the group. Two security personnel — a Forest Department guard identified as Sushanta Bhowmik and a BSF jawan — were injured, and two police vehicles were vandalised, with one initially unrecoverable from the site. The damaged vehicle was later recovered using a crane. Senior police officials reached the location and additional police were deployed. A case was registered in connection with the attack and an investigation initiated.
