Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The article rests on the RSC listing for Kandahar, the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line and RSC's February 2025 blog post on powdery mildew resistance. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose). The listings say the landrace was collected outside Kandahar in 2019 and has since been reproduced ex situ; they name no village or farmer. The history of cannabis in Kandahar, of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and of Schultes's 1971 expedition is RSC's and has not been checked against other sources; the article attributes it. RSC's blog posts of July and August 2023 on a 1971 photograph of Schultes in Afghanistan concern the expedition, not this accession, and are not used. No conservation priority has been entered; the rating is left for review. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)

Georeferencing

The listings name Kandahar Province and say the landrace was collected "outside Kandahar"; RSC gives a latitude of 32° N. The coordinate is the city of Kandahar in OpenStreetMap (node 97993575), rounded to two decimal places: 31.62, 65.72, in Kandahar District. The listing places the collection outside the city, so the point marks the city it names, not a collection site. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)

Editorial treatment

  • Accession ID. RSC-AFG-KAN-0120190001 takes KAN from Kandahar Province. The month digits are 01.
  • Name and type. Kandahar Reproduction 2019, with accession type Reproduction and autochtonous No, because the seed on sale is "a reproduction of the original accession made in 2019". No sourcing type is entered: the listings do not say how many generations have been grown.
  • Collector. Angus, as on the other accessions whose sourcing line reads "Landrace Genetics".
  • Purposes. "Charas (sieved resin)" is entered as purpose Recreation and processing method Dry-sift.
  • Not entered. Leaf shape, because "Indica-type leaflets" names a type, not a width; seed viability.
  • Links. Kandahar is linked as a place whose page type is Éloïse's call, and Schultes under his full name.
  • Conventions. Photoperiod Short-day and introgression Minimal follow the other RSC accessions; neither listing states them. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)

Source discrepancies

  • Genetics line. RSC: "Afghan Hindu Kush Cannabis Landrace". Kwik Seeds: "Afghan Hindu Kush Landrace".
  • Opening. RSC: "A landrace Indica collected outside Kandahar in 2019 and then maintained ex-situ." Kwik Seeds opens with "Kandahar is a crucial region for Cannabis", RSC's wording until May 2024.
  • Only on RSC. "At least as early as the 19th Century" and the note on the photograph.

The listings otherwise carry the same text. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)

Archived versions

The Wayback Machine holds 17 versions of the RSC listing, from April 2021 to July 2026, and all were read. All give the 2019 collection and call the seed a reproduction of it.

  • The genetics line read "Afghan Hindu Kush Domesticate (“Landrace”)" until January 2023, and the sourcing line ended "Afghanistan, 2019 Harvest" until April 2025.
  • "Collected outside Kandahar" first appears in June 2023. "Maintained ex-situ", "at least as early as the 19th Century" and the note on the photograph first appear in January 2025.
  • The April 2021 version showed a different image, filed as "Figure-2-Richard-Evans-Schultes".

The archived versions add nothing to the article. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)

Photographs

The infobox image is the listing's only photograph. RSC says it shows "a plant from this accession at 40° N in mid July", so the caption says so. Kwik Seeds shows a byte-identical copy. The person holding the measuring pole is cut off above the shoulder. It was uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. Éloise 13:42, 17 September 2026 (+07)
