Mazar-i-Sharif General Population 2006 is a seed accession of the Mazar-i-Sharif seed that The Real Seed Company (RSC) sold on its first website. In May 2009 the company wrote: "Our Mazar-i-Sharif seeds are all from Winter 2006 so this is the last year for this batch."[1] The line is named after Mazar-i-Sharif, in Balkh Province, northern Afghanistan.

Collection Details

In June 2009 the site's catalogue put Mazar-i-Sharif in a region it called the Hindu Kush and sold the seed in packs of 5, 12 and 25.[2] The site's About Us page named Mazar-i-Sharif among the "charas lines from legendary regions" in its catalogue.[3] A news item dated 26 May, on the version of the news page archived in June 2009, offered 50% extra seed free with every order of the line, because the batch from Winter 2006 was in its last year.[1] A later item, dated 2 January and archived in March 2010, gave away "8 Free Ex-stock Mazar-i-Sharif With All Orders".[4] None of these pages says who gathered the seed, where, or how.

By May 2010 the line's product page read "Fresh stock now available." That version calls the line a "Pure North Afghan Charas Cultivar" and "A legendary cultivar native to the lowland desert oasis towns of Balkh and Mazar-i-Sharif in the far north of Afghanistan, just beyond the Hindu Kush mountains". It says that the line yields the sieved charas called "Shirak-i-Mazar" and "Milk of Mazar", and gives a latitude of 36° N and a harvest in October and November.[5] No earlier version of the product page was archived, so it is not known whether the seed of 2006 was sold with the same description.

Later reproductions

ATAO Genetics has selected a line from one pack of this seed since 2009.[6] Its line has its own accession, 2006 ATA Mazar-i-Sharif IBL.
