Identifier

The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-BAL-0120060001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.

  • Holder segment RSC stands for The Real Seed Company.
  • Province segment BAL is for Balkh Province, as on RSC-AFG-BAL-0120180001. The line is named after Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province, and the only description of it, from May 2010, places it in the towns of Balkh and Mazar-i-Sharif, both in that province.
  • Year 2006 is the year of the seed: the news page archived on 7 June 2009 says "Our Mazar-i-Sharif seeds are all from Winter 2006". It does not say whether that winter fell at the start or the end of 2006, or whether it is the harvest or the purchase.
  • Month 01 is a placeholder; no month is stated.
  • Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this country, province segment and year.

Sourcing

All from Wayback Machine captures of the company's first website, therealseedcompany.com: the home page of 25 May 2009 (the earliest capture of the site), the product list and the Hindu Kush region page of June 2009, the About Us page of 8 June 2009, the news page of 7 June 2009, the news item of 2 January archived on 4 March 2010, and the product page for the line (products.php?product_id=5), archived only once, on 21 May 2010. The site printed news items with a day and month but no year; the capture dates bound them to 2009 and 2010. No capture from before 25 May 2009 exists, so when the company first offered the line is not known.

Evidentiary scope

This page records the seed RSC sold until its stock from Winter 2006 ran out. The news item of May 2009 says that 2009 was the last year for that batch, and the item of January 2010 gave away "Ex-stock" seed. The product page of May 2010 announced "Fresh stock now available", which is taken here as a different lot; it is used for the line's description, dated and attributed, and its traits are not entered in the infobox, because no capture shows that description while the 2006 seed was on sale. RSC's Balkhi lots of 2018 and 2019 (RSC-AFG-BAL-0120180001, RSC-AFG-BAL-0120190001) were sold under another name and dated by other collections; nothing in the sources ties them to this seed.

Typing

  • Classification: Landrace and accession type: General population, as for RSC's other collections. RSC calls the line a "Pure North Afghan Charas Cultivar" (May 2010).
  • Sourcing type is empty: no version of the site says how the seed was obtained. The Balkhi pages carry Point of Origin because their listings name a collector; these do not.
  • Collection date is the year only. "Winter 2006" stays in the article.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The only place in the description of May 2010 is a pair of towns, Balkh (OpenStreetMap node 312726837) and Mazar-i-Sharif (the city's boundary, relation 6572774), about 20 km apart, named as the places the cultivar is native to, not as where the seed was gathered. Nothing separates the two, and the finest unit holding both is Balkh Province.

Later growers

ATAO Genetics says its line started in 2009 from "landrace seeds released by The Real Seed Co." and that its mother plant was photographed in June 2009 (https://overgrow.com/t/mazar-i-shariff-ataos-strawberry-ibl/104826/1). RSC's news page said in May 2009 that all its seed of the line was from Winter 2006, and it gave the old stock away in January 2010, so a pack sown in 2009 was from this batch. ATAO's line is ATA-AFG-BAL-0120060001, which names this page as its parent.

Photographs

None. The four photographs on the product page were archived only from 2011, after the new stock of 2010, and one of them is also on ATAO Genetics' own listing of its line, so none can be tied to this batch.

Conservation priority

Not rated. The listings say nothing about the source population.
