Focus Regular seed of landrace, heirloom and "vintage" lines, some dated to the year of their collection

Hippie Cannabis Genetics (HCG) is a cannabis seed producer that sells regular seed of lines it describes as landrace, heirloom and vintage cultivars. Three of its lines are named for the year in which, it says, they were collected.[1][2] The business says it was created in 2018 in Flint, Michigan, in the United States. It says it specialises in the reproduction and preservation of such cultivars and was founded "to help facilitate the return of pure landraces back to the modern commercial market".[1] The homepage link in its SeedFinder entry leads to its Instagram account.[1] In 2026 a member of the cannabis growers' forum Overgrow wrote that it sold only through Instagram, where its list of seed was available by direct message.[3] Other members of the forum have grown, reproduced and crossed several of its lines. Some have praised them; others have doubted that its Acapulco Gold is a landrace or that its Durban dates from 1973.

Lines and their stated origins

SeedFinder lists 12 lines from the business, all of them sold as regular seed.[1] Three carry a year in their names: the 1970 Colombian Gold, the 1971 Panama Red and the 1973 Durban. HCG says that one person collected all three.[2] Its Colombian Gold, it says, was "Reproduced from original 52+ year old seeds (at time of reproduction)".[4] It says the Durban was collected in 1973 from what were then called "Durban Pencils", which it calls "A rare import in the U.S in the early 1970s".[5] HCG says it bred its Golden Haze from a "1969 Acapulco Gold" and the 1970 Colombian Gold, using what it calls original seeds. It calls the Golden Haze an "Extremely limited original release".[6] Its descriptions give flowering periods of 16 to 18 weeks for the Panama Red and the Durban, 18 to 24 weeks for the Golden Haze and more than 20 weeks for its Punto Rojo.[2][5][6][7]

The other lines carry the names of places. HCG calls its Acapulco Gold a classic cultivar of Mexico.[8] It places Afghanistan Nangarhar in Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan, Egypt Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt and Pakistan Chitral Kush in the Chitral Valley of Pakistan. It calls all three hashish cultivars.[9][10][11] It says its "Moroccan Beldia" is a traditional cultivar from outside Marrakech in Morocco.[12] It calls its Greek Kalamata Red a sativa landrace from the Kalamata region of Greece.[13] Two further lines carry the name of Colombia. HCG says its Colombian Mangobiche was exported to the United States in the 1970s and 1980s "just on a smaller scale and by different names".[14]

HCG credits its Colombian "Incense" Punto Rojo to Lugo Mez and the Zomia Collective. Its description reads "Originally Sourced by Lugo Mez and The Zomia Collective" and calls the seed "1st generation from point of origin".[7] Per the records of the Zomia Collective, the seed derives from its Punto Rojo collection ZOM-COL-QUIN-0120240001; HCG's line is documented as the accession HCG-COL-QUIN-0120240001.

Grow reports and reproductions

In 2021 the Overgrow member TestOfOath grew HCG's 1973 Durban, its Pakistan Chitral Kush and a Highland Nepalese from the same source. The member gave out seed of all three for preservation runs.[15] The same member grew HCG's 1970 Colombian Gold, a line the member said HCG had preserved. A plant of it that proved to be male was given back to HCG.[16]

In December 2021 the member blendmedmedman opened a grow log of "1973 Durban" seed that had been given to them "in hopes of preserving the strain".[17] After writing to HCG through Instagram,[18] the member reported that the breeder had said the line was a sativa from South Africa of the 1970s. The seed itself, the member added, was not from that decade but from a reproduction run.[19]

The member Upstate grew HCG's Durban in 2023. The faster plants flowered in 15 to 16 weeks; the slower ones were to be cut at about 18 weeks.[20] Upstate also grew the 1971 Panama Red, which came from HCG.[21][22] A lot of 15 seeds of Upstate's reproduction of it was auctioned on the forum in July 2026.[23]

The member DainIronFoot received HCG's Acapulco Gold, Colombian Gold and 1971 Panama Red in 2023.[24] In late 2024 the member grew the Acapulco Gold alongside two other producers' versions of it[25] and pollinated the HCG plants to make seed.[26] In February 2025, ten weeks into flowering, the HCG plants turned hermaphrodite. DainIronFoot cut them down and decided not to keep the line.[27] The member later wrote that all the female plants had done so.[28]

HCG's lines have also gone into crosses. TestOfOath pollinated the Durban, the Chitral Kush and the Highland Nepalese with pollen from a reversed clone of Ice Cream Cake;[29] in 2022 PAGODASEEDS listed a cross made with HCG's "Beldia Moroccan Pure Landrace".[30] In 2024 the member deeez99 bought from HCG the 1970s Colombian Gold that, according to deeez99, the breeder hyp3rid had used in a cross called Colombian Gold Legacy Edition.[31][32]

Reception on Overgrow

Upstate, who had grown HCG's 1971 Panama Red, wrote in 2023 that the famous Panama Red was a hybrid and ranked five versions of it by the strength of their indica influence. HCG's came fourth, with a flowering time of 18 to 20 weeks, after those of ACE Seeds, Cannabiogen and SnowHigh and before a 1974 Panama Red that Upstate called the only pure one. Upstate judged HCG's line mixed but thought it "the version people remember smoking",[21] and in January 2024 advised members who wanted the Panama Red smoked in those years to grow it.[33]

Upstate also wrote in 2023 that plants grown from HCG's Durban had the "deep musky smell" of Durban.[20] In August 2024, in the thread on the 1973 Durban, Heirloomwizard judged from the plants pictured there that they had been "hybridized to some degree", being too frosty for an African sativa, and suggested that the year in the line's name was a marketing label nobody had troubled to verify.[34] LandraceJunkie wrote in 2025 that HCG's was the only Durban Poison from 1973 they knew of.[35]

DainIronFoot, whose plants of HCG's Acapulco Gold finished in ten weeks, wrote in June 2025 that they showed the influence of broad-leaf drug-type (BLD) cannabis and were "definitely not landrace".[36] In January 2026 the member wrote that the experience had made them wary of old seed finds.[37] In May 2026 PineSoulBuddy wrote that HCG had "authentic 20+ week Acapulco Gold" at the time.[38]

Other lines have drawn praise. TestOfOath, who grew HCG's Pakistan Chitral Kush, rated it highly in 2023.[39] In 2026 PineSoulBuddy praised HCG's landraces and heirlooms in general and called its Punto Rojo "a true wild sativa" that flowers for more than 18 weeks,[38][3] and Myrrhlin compared another sativa with "the 60s columbians I grew from hippie cannabis genetics".[40]
