1973 Durban 2021 is a seed accession of the cannabis line that Hippie Cannabis Genetics (HCG) sells as 1973 Durban. HCG says that the line was "Originally collected in 1973 from what were then called Durban Pencils", which it calls "A rare import in the U.S in the early 1970s", and calls the plant a "pure african".[1] It says that the same person collected its 1970 Colombian Gold and its 1971 Panama Red.[2]

History

The earliest dated mention of the line as HCG's found is a post of 19 October 2021 on the growers' forum Overgrow. In it the member TestOfOath showed a "red pheno Durban" beside two other lines, all three "from Hippie Cannabis Genetics", and said that seed of each had been given out for preservation runs.[3]

In December 2021 another member opened a grow log of 1973 Durban seed received "in hopes of preserving the strain".[4] After writing to HCG,[5] the member reported that the breeder had described the line as a sativa of the 1970s from South Africa, and added that the seed itself was not from the 1970s but from a reproduction run.[6]

Cultivation Details

HCG gives a flowering period of about 16 to 18 weeks.[1] The Overgrow member Upstate, who grew the line in 2023, reported that the faster plants flowered in 15 to 16 weeks and that the slower ones were to be cut at about 18.[7]

Botanical Characteristics

HCG describes tall, branching plants with moderate spacing between the nodes.[1]

Aroma

HCG describes a spicy, earthy smell and flavour with a note of anise.[1]

Effects

HCG calls the effect energetic and clear-headed, and warns that too much can bring on panic and paranoia.[1]
