Ban Nan Toeng 'Elite' Selection #8 2024 is a short-day landrace cannabis accession originating from Ban Nan Toeng in the Phu Phan Mountains of Sakhon Nakhon Province, Isan, Thailand. This domesticated Lao-Isan population represents an open-pollinated general population.

This accession forms part of ongoing conservation work by Éloïse and Isabella of the Zomia Collective to document and preserve traditional cannabis populations of Northeastern Thailand. Seeds were collected at Point of Origin and are stored in the Zomia Genetic Library to maintain genetic diversity.

Geography

The accession grows on the edge of the Kut Bak plateau in the Phu Phan Mountains of Isan, Thailand, at elevations ranging from 200 to 400 meters. The warm, seasonally dry climate and well-drained soils support tall sativa morphology and a short-day flowering response.

Collection Details

Ban Nan Toeng 'Elite' Selection #8 was collected in 2024 by Éloïse and Isabella from the Nan Toeng Village Community. Seeds were harvested directly on the farm using traditional open-pollination methods. The population shows minimal introgression and retains classic Lao-Isan landrace traits.

Regional planting occurs from July to September, with harvest between January and March. Cultivation remains active with an estimated population of 10000 plants.

Botanical Characteristics

The Ban Nan Toeng population is characterized by tall, narrow-leaf morphology with long internodal spacing and strong lateral branching. Plants reach 2–3 meters and produce high resin yields.

Two primary phenotypic expressions occur within the population:

Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Robust structure with thicker colas, strong branching, and dense trichomes. Aromas include earthy spice, herbal musk, and woody undertones. Effects are clear-headed, energizing, and ideal for daytime use.

Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): Elongated, foxtailed colas with lighter flowers. Aromas are sweet, floral, tropical fruit, and mango. Effects are uplifting and long-lasting, reflecting classic Mekong sativa qualities.

Conservation Status

High conservation priority. Male culling for seedless flower production has reduced genetic diversity, creating a bottleneck. Conservation breeding projects are underway to increase male populations and produce stabilized seed stock for local farmers, ensuring the long-term survival of this historic landrace.
