Cannabis and Sustainable Development in Ghomara's Mountains (Western Coastal Part of Rif - North of Morocco): The Gender Makes the Difference?
Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa
A survey of 249 people in the Ghomara area of the western coastal Rif, using a combined quantitative and qualitative sociological approach, on the position of women in a society whose agriculture and social life rest largely on their labour. The authors report that women are held back from the management of cannabis cultivation and from holding work of their own outside the family, while carrying the greater part of the agricultural and domestic work and the transmission of local custom. They argue that no development intervention in the area will succeed without addressing that position first. Companion study to the same group's later work on schooling in the same area.
