Pulag is a village in the Kullu Valley in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India. It lies above Naggar in the Chanderkhani valley, a side valley at right angles to the Kullu Valley that also holds Rumsu and Hallan.[1][2] The 2011 census recorded 208 inhabitants.[3]: 58 The Zomia Collective's collection documentation calls Pulag the highest of the three villages, with some of its fields above 3,000 m.[1] Four accessions of Chanderkhani Valley cannabis, a population worked for charas that the collection documentation classes as a narrow-leafed drug-type landrace, carry Pulag as their locality.[1]
Geography
Pulag lies on the north-facing side of the Chanderkhani valley, the same side as Rumsu.[1] The collection documentation gives its height as 2,500 m and describes it as "situated near glaciers and above 3000m in some fields".[1] The accession pages give 2,200 m for the village collection site and 2,500 m for the upper-field selection.
The 2011 census enumerated the village as "Up Muhal Pulag", with 208 inhabitants (103 males and 105 females) in 43 households on 195.88 ha. It placed Pulag in Kullu tehsil and in the Naggar community development block.[3]: 58[4] The census village directory records a public bus service and a gravel road but no metalled or all-weather road. It gives the distance to Kullu as 28 km and lists maize, wheat and barley as the main crops.[4]
Cannabis cultivation
The collection documentation describes cultivation in the Chanderkhani valley as historically semi-domesticated: small plots on steep terraces, where the plants grow with little tending and are often rubbed for charas on the spot. It credits Rumsu and Pulag, villages of high terraces and rugged terrain, with having "preserved some of the most vigorous and resilient plants".[1] It calls Pulag's landrace expressions "among the most potent and resinous" and credits the altitude and rich soils.[1]
Four accessions come from Pulag: a general population, a selection from plants around the village, a selection from the upper fields above it and a selection from the feral plants around it.[1] The accession pages class the feral selection as feral and the other three as landrace. They record the general population and the village selection as semi-feral and intercropped; the upper-field selection is recorded as a rotating mono-crop. The accession names carry the year 2022; the accession pages give collection dates written 04/09/2023 and 05/09/2023.
The Zomia Collective's index of growing regions tags the Pulag village area "Eradications Ongoing", a tag it defines as "Active eradication observed or reported". It leaves the village's upper fields untagged, which under the index's legend means they were directly documented or accessed.[5]
