Pulgi is a hamlet in a side valley of the Parvati Valley in Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India. It shares the valley with Grahan and Thunja and, like them, has no road connection. The hamlet stands at about 2,400 m on south-facing slopes.[1] Cannabis is cultivated around it for charas. Pulgi gives its name to an appellation recorded in seed-collection documentation for the valley.[2]
Name
Three similarly named places lie within about 35 km of one another in Kullu district. Sources confuse them, so each is distinguished here. Pulgi is the hamlet described in this article. Pulga is a larger and much better known village on the opposite side of the valley near Barshaini, on the walking route towards Tosh and Kheerganga; it was one of five Manikaran-valley villages covered by an ethnobotanical survey of wild hemp published in 2018.[3] Pulag is an unrelated village in the main Kullu valley near Katrain, enumerated in the 2011 census with a population of 208.[4]
Geography and settlement
Pulgi lies south of Grahan in the same side valley, at a comparable elevation but with more direct sun.[1] A road runs partway up the valley from Kasol as far as the trailheads serving Pulgi, Grahan and Thunja; the hamlet itself is reached on foot.[1]
Pulgi is not separately enumerated in the 2011 Census of India: no settlement of the name appears in the district census handbook for Kullu under any spelling.[4] The same source records that Kullu tehsil's count of enumerated villages rose from 65 to 163 between 2001 and 2011 as hamlets were promoted to village status, so a small or recent settlement standing below that threshold would not appear.[4] No population figure has been published for Pulgi. The hamlet's founding is not documented in any published source; it is held locally to be recent, having grown out of cultivated ground worked from Grahan within roughly the past two decades.[citation needed]
Cannabis cultivation
The cannabis grown at Pulgi is a narrow-leafed drug-type landrace worked for charas, as elsewhere in the side valley; collection notes record plants selected around the hamlet by residents making the resin.[1] Documentation for the valley lists eradication as ongoing at the hamlet's fields.[2]
One accession has been collected at Pulgi, in 2022. Its record carries a descriptive name prefixed with Grahan, the valley's larger settlement.[1]
