Issaguen is a cannabis appellation in the Ketama growing area, covering the rural commune of Issaguen in Al Hoceima Province, in the central Rif Mountains of northern Morocco.

Geography

The appellation is the commune. It adjoins the Abdelghaya Souahel, Beni Bounsar, Ketama and Moulay Ahmed Cherif appellations.

History

After independence the new government tolerated cannabis growing inside a delimited perimeter round the douar of Azila, at the foot of Jbel Tidighine in Senhaja Srair country, and undertook to buy the whole crop from the growers and burn it. The promise was not kept beyond 1958.[1]: 134 Azila and Talarouak, both douars of the Aït Seddat tribe, are two of the five douars that the ethnobotanist Jamal Bellakhdar has proposed, with caution, as those in which Sultan Hassan I is said to have allowed cannabis growing. Pierre-Arnaud Chouvy writes that there seems to be no historical written source naming the five douars.[2]

Growing since 2000

In 1971–1982 Issaguen was the only commune of the 2004 survey whose population was already growing at three times the national rural rate, which, the survey's authors wrote, could only be explained by a very profitable source of income such as cannabis.[3]: 38 The same survey measured yields on plots at Issaguen.[3]: 56 A development scheme gave households of Azila a goat, a ewe or a cockerel as a source of income to replace kif; the geographer M'hamed Boudouah wrote that the people never understood what the gifts were for.[4]: 11 In 2015 Finances News Hebdo called Issaguen the new name of Ketama and, with Bab Berred, a place where farmers from Larache went to work for experienced kif growers.[5]

Seed collections

The genebank of INRA Maroc holds seed of the local cannabis collected in the commune at Talarouaq in September 2021.[6] It also holds seed collected at Issaguen, Ben El Meki, Dahbia, Arabi, Irmad, Assekssaf, Temouth and Azila in May 2023.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]
