Davis 50730 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis collected on 19 August 1970 between Ketama and Tleta Ketama in the central Rif Mountains of Morocco, at 1,450 metres, by Peter Hadland Davis. The label records the plant as a field crop. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00669323.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The typed label reads Davis 50730, Cannabis and MOROCCO. R: Ketama to Tleta Ketama. 1450 m. Field crop. 1-3 ft. tall. Annual. 19 August 1970.[3] The catalogue gives the same locality without the R:, the habitat as Field crop. and the description as 1--3 ft tall annual.[1]
Two other Davis sheets at Edinburgh carry the same locality: number 50698, collected the day before at 1,400 metres on shaley slopes, and number 50739, collected the same day at 1,450 metres on dry sunny banks.[4][5]
Ketama, under that name, was the village now called Issaguen, in Al Hoceima Province.[6] Tleta Ketama is the settlement recorded by GeoNames as Et Tleta des Ketama, about 6 kilometres south-west of Issaguen.[7]
Cultivation observation
Field crop is the only habitat on the label, and 1-3 ft. tall gives the height of the plants, about 30 to 90 centimetres. The sheet holds one whole plant with its root.[3]
Specimen and identification
The catalogue determines the sheet only to genus, as Cannabis L., with no determiner named.[1] The collector, Peter Hadland Davis (1918–1992), is known for his work on the Flora of Turkey.[8] The sheet image is published by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.[3]
