Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label records the plant as a field crop between Ketama and Tleta Ketama in August 1970, which places cannabis under cultivation in the Ketama area at that date. It records the height of the plants and the altitude. It does not name a variety or a local name, and it does not record a use. Whether the crop was the local population the literature calls beldiya is not stated on the sheet. The accession is classified Other: a single sheet of a field crop establishes cultivation, not a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the Edinburgh image (2797 × 4096 pixels).
- Typed label. Davis 50730 / Cannabis / MOROCCO. R: Ketama to Tleta Ketama. / 1450 m. Field crop. 1-3 ft. tall. / Annual. 19 August 1970.
- Pencil above the label. A curatorial note of numbers, not read further.
- Fragment packet, upper left: closed.
The R: is on the label and not in the catalogue. Across Davis's Moroccan sheets the catalogue carries prefixes of this kind (R:, T:, GA:, MA:, AA: and others), and every R: locality is in the Rif. No source read for this page defines the prefixes, so R: is quoted and not expanded.
Georeferencing
The label names a stretch of road between two settlements: Ketama, the former name of Issaguen (Wikidata Q2737756, 34.92, −4.57), and Et Tleta des Ketama (GeoNames 2549155, 34.88, −4.62), about 6 kilometres apart. The coordinate is the Issaguen point, the named settlement at one end. It stands for the start of the stretch and not for the field. The label's 1,450 metres lies between the two settlements' heights in the 30-metre SRTM elevation model (about 1,500 metres at Issaguen and 1,300 metres at Et Tleta), which fits a field along the road between them. The same point is used for the Ketama seed accession RSC-MAR-HOC-0119900001, and the Edinburgh catalogue georeferences Davis 50713, above Ketama, to 34.91, −4.56.
Editorial treatment
The accession is filed under the Ketama growing area and the Rif Mountains growing region because the label's locality is the Ketama area.
The scientific name field takes Cannabis L., the determination on the label and in the catalogue; the sheet has not been determined to species.
The collector field takes P.H. Davis, the label form. The International Plant Names Index gives Peter Hadland Davis, 1918–1992. The catalogue credits Davis alone for August 1970.
