Mekliganj is a landrace cannabis appellation in the Koch Bihar growing area of the North Bengal Plains, in Cooch Behar District, West Bengal, India. It covers Mekliganj subdivision, the Mekliganj and Haldibari blocks, at the western end of the district on the Bangladesh border. A survey in June 2025 collected feral seed at Haldibari and domesticate landrace seed from two growers in the Fulkardabri sector.[1]

Cultivation

On the outskirts of Haldibari the 2025 survey found an established self-seeding stand of an estimated 400–500 plants on an abandoned lot, and smaller feral patches along embankments and drains in and near the town.[1] Mekliganj town itself had no significant stands. Domesticate plants grew along a tea-estate boundary and in household gardens near Fulkardabri, and a grower there said that local farmers mostly kept their own seed lines and distrusted hybrid seed brought from elsewhere in India.[1]

Enforcement

Mekhliganj police seized 16.9 kg of ganja from a motorcyclist at Chowrangi Bazar in March 2024[2] and about 57.65 kg from a car at the Changrabandha bypass checkpost in June 2026.[3]
