Indonesia eradication campaigns (2023)

From Landrace.Wiki - The Landrace Cannabis Wiki
Main article: Eradication campaigns in Indonesia

Indonesia eradication campaigns (2023) covers cannabis eradication reporting from Indonesia during 2023. The year's defining documented operation was Polda Sumut's satellite-led location of about 150 hectares of cannabis in the Tor Sihite hills of Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra, in November, described in contemporary reporting as the largest cannabis cultivation complex found in Indonesia to that point. The operation marked the shift of North Sumatra detection from foot patrols to satellite imagery with drone verification, a methodology BNN institutionalised nationally through its partnership with BRIN and BIG from 2023.[1][2]

Documented operations

On 11 November Polda Sumut announced that satellite imagery followed by drone verification had located about 150 hectares of cannabis across 18 points in the Tor Sihite hills of Mandailing Natal: ten points at Desa Rao-Rao Dolok in Tambangan district and eight at Desa Pardomuan and Huta Tua in Panyabungan Timur. The investigation began with the arrest of three couriers carrying 15 kg of cannabis at Gunung Baringin on 1 November; police described the fields as run from inside a Padang prison by an inmate and arrested a landowner from Desa Huta Bangun. Nine of the 18 locations had been destroyed by the following day.[1]

In October, BNN destroyed a cannabis field at about 1,300 metres elevation at Desa Pulo, Seulimum district, Aceh Besar, the first operation under its aerial-surveillance partnership with the national research agency BRIN and the geospatial agency BIG.[2]
