Yu 10078 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on a grassy slope near Atuntze (now Shengping, the seat of Deqin County), in Yunnan, China, at 3,200 m on 1 September 1937 by T. T. Yu. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds two sheets, PE 00578077[1] and PE 00578083[2], and the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences a third as KUN 0169107.[3]
Collection and locality
Each sheet carries a typed field slip: T.T.Yü 10078 Sept. 1, 1937, the place Y. Atuntze followed by two names that are faint or cut at the edge, read as [Y?]ungpu and Sanoka, the altitude alt. 3200 m., the habitat grassy slope, herb with its height, the flowers whitish green, the word casual and Morac. Cannabis. A round printed tag reads F. I. B. Yunnan Exp., Coll. T. T. Yü and the number in red.[4][5] The catalogue gives the collector as 俞德俊, the number, the year and Yunnan.[1] The Kunming sheet carries the same round tag, numbered 10078 in red, and a later form of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, headed 雲南植物 (Yunnan plants), filled in by hand: the date 9.1.1937 (month first), a place in faint cursive characters, the altitude 3200m, a grassy slope, a herb 1-3 ft high, whitish-green flowers, the note casual and the collector 俞德浚 (Yü Te-tsun).[6]
Specimen and identification
PE 00578077 carries one rooted stem with a terminal raceme of male flowers, and PE 00578083 two rooted, leafy stems with flower clusters. A later slip on each names the plant Cannabis sativa L., signed 關克儉 on 27 January 1956.[4][5] The Kunming sheet carries two long rooted stems and a branched stem with open male flowers, and a slip of 1959 naming the plant Cannabis sativa L.[6] Yü had gathered cannabis at Sichang five years earlier: Yu 1220 (1932).
