Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The slip places the plant on a grassy slope near Atuntze, at 3,200 m, in September 1937, and calls it casual. It gives no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00578077, 1,040 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00578083, 1,039 × 1,440 pixels).
- Field slip (both sheets, typed, faint): T.T.Yü 10078 Sept. 1,1937 / Y. Atuntze [Y?]ungpu, Sanoka (on PE 00578077 the line ends at …pu,, the rest at the edge) / alt. 3200 m. / grassy slope / herb ht 1.[·] ft. / fl whitish green / casual / Morac. Cannabis.
- Tag (both sheets; round, printed): F. I. B. / YUNNAN EXP. / Coll. T. T. Yü / No. 10078 (red).
- Determination slip (both sheets): Cannabis sativa L. / 定名人 關克儉 1956年1月27日.
- YUNNAN province stamp; stamped number 340542 on both sheets.
The readings agree on the collector, the number, the date, the habitat, the note and the slip. They differ on the place after Atuntze, read once as [Y?]ungpu and once as Hungpu, uncertain; the plant's height (1.5 and 1.2 ft) and the altitude on PE 00578077 are uncertain in one reading.
- Kunming sheet (KUN 0169107), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (KUN 0169107, 959 × 1,440 pixels). Form (printed, the top line cut at the sheet's edge, 中國科學院植… / 雲南植物, filled in faint ink): 採集號數 1007[?]8 (the last figures faint, read as 10078 and as 1007[5?]) / 日期 9.1.1937 / 產地 [德?]欽宏坡三[·][·] (cursive; the readings differ on the first character and the last two) / 海拔高度 3200m / 環境 山坡草地 (one reading 山箐草地) / 習性 草本 / 體高 1-3 ft / 花 白綠色 / 其他 casual / 科名 Morac. / 學名 Cannabis / 採集人 俞德浚. Round tag (printed, number in red): F. I. B. / YUNNAN EXP. / COLL. T. T. YÜ / No. 10078. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / 定名人, a cursive name not read with confidence (one reading 黃成就, uncertain) / 1959年 and a month read as 五 and as XI. Round stamp of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, faded; KUN No. 0525313. The readings agree on the tag, the date, the altitude and the notes.
Georeferencing
A-tun-tze (阿墩子, Atuntze) is the old name of Shengping (升平镇), the seat of Deqin County: OpenStreetMap's node for the town (node 332545406) carries the alternative names 阿墩子 and Atunzu, and Chinese Wikipedia gives the name 阿墩子 from 1726. The slip's [Y?]ungpu may be Hongpo (红坡), a village of Yunling township in Deqin County, but only by sound, and Sanoka was not found, so neither is used. The point 28.48, 98.92 is that node. SRTM gives 3,198 m there against the label's 3,200 m. The point stands for the town and the township around it (Shengping, OpenStreetMap relation 10092300, about 766 km²), not the slope where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 16 km.
Editorial treatment
Three sheets, one accession. The Beijing sheets share the slip, the tag, the number and the stamped number; the Kunming sheet carries the same tag and a later form with the same date, altitude, habitat, flower colour and note. The repository and catalogue number are PE 00578077's.
The Kunming form's place. The place on the Kunming form is faint and cursive. Both readings take its third and fourth characters as 宏坡, which fits the Beijing slips' [Y?]ungpu / Hungpu in sound; they differ on the first character (德, for 德欽, Deqin, and 孫) and on the last three. 宏坡 is not the Hongpo (红坡) named under Georeferencing, whose first character differs, and the point is unchanged.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's T. T. Yü. He is Yü Te-tsun (俞德浚, 1908–1986): the Harvard botanist index gives the name and dates and notes that he collected extensively in Yunnan and Sichuan, and Chinese Wikipedia gives T.T.Yu as his standard form. The prose links Yü Te-tsun.
Determination. The 1956 slip is signed 關克儉 in characters, and the identified-by field takes the name as written.
Elevation. The elevation field stores the slip's 3,200 m.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The form on the Kunming sheet gives the height as 1-3 ft; the Beijing slips give 1.5 and 1.2 ft, read with doubt.
