Wallich 4665E is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from lot E of entry 4665 in Nathaniel Wallich's numbered list of the East India Company's herbarium, a lot from Hb. Wight, the herbarium of Robert Wight.[1] The sheet is E00248812 at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.[2][3]
The Wallich lot
Entry 4665 of the list, Cannabis sativa, is printed on page 166 and divides into eight lots, lettered A to H, most of them identified by the herbarium or garden that supplied the material: lot E reads Hb. Wight and lot F HBC. Lots G and H, added on page 215, are dated gatherings, from Nepal in 1821 and Tong Dong in 1826.[1] The list's main distribution began in December 1828 and ended in the summer of 1832 with entry 7683, on page 253.[4] The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds another sheet of the lot, K001039636, whose GBIF entry reads Hb. Wight; Cannabis sativa; EICH number: 4665 E.[5]
Labels
The sheet is inscribed in ink at the lower left Ind. Orient. E.I.C. and Wall. Cat. 4665. E.[6] Two further labels are pasted over the stems. One reads Cannabis sativa, Mus. and Garden 81. The other reads Cannabis sativa, Ganja (Duk.), Darwar jungles and May.[6] Neither label's wording appears in entry 4665 of the list, and nothing on the sheet says whether either belongs to the Wight lot.[1] Edinburgh's catalogue dates the sheet 1887.[2]
Specimen and identification
At least three leafy, flowering stems are mounted, and nothing marks which stem goes with which label.[6] The catalogue name is Cannabis sativa L.[2] A sheet from Wight's own herbarium at Edinburgh is Wight s.n. (1821), and lot F of the same entry is Wallich 4665F (by 1832).
