Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The sheet documents Cannabis in the East India Company's herbarium by the summer of 1832, from the lot the Wallich list attributes to Wight's herbarium. The lot carries no place, date, habitat or use. The two other labels give a name, Ganja (Duk.), a place, Darwar jungles, and a month, but nothing ties them to the lot or to a particular stem. The accession is classified Other. It does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00248812, 2839 × 4096 pixels).

  • Inscription, lower left, ink: Ind. Orient. E.I.C. / Wall. Cat. 4665. E.
  • Label, centre: Cannabis sativa / Mus. / Garden 81.
  • Label, lower right: Cannabis sativa / Ganja (Duk.) / Darwar jungles / May. Faint reversed writing at its foot, probably seen through the paper, cannot be read.
  • Foot of the sheet: Cannabis sativa.

Georeferencing

No place is asserted. The Wallich lot names a source herbarium, not a place. The label Darwar jungles names a place, but nothing on the sheet ties it to the lot, so the infobox does not adopt it. The country is India, the country of the East India Company list and of Edinburgh's catalogue.

Editorial treatment

The title follows the way Wallich lots are cited, by Wallich's name, the entry number and the lot letter, in the (by <year>) form used for sheets with no date. The year is the end of the list's main distribution in the summer of 1832, which included page 166. The collector field is left empty: the lot's source in the list is Wight's herbarium, not a collector. The collector number field takes the list reference.

The Wallich list is cited from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's online edition, which transcribes each lot and links the Kew sheets.

Source discrepancies

  • Date. Edinburgh's catalogue and GBIF: 1887. Nothing on the sheet gives a year, and the Wallich lot was listed by 1832. The infobox leaves the date empty.
  • Distribution dates. The front page of the online Wallich Catalogue says the specimens were distributed between 1829 and 1847. The same institution's account of the project says the distribution resumed in 1847 and was completed in November 1849. Neither date is used here.
