Vermoesen s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Pusa, in Bihar, India, on 4 July 1911 by the Belgian botanist Vermoesen. Its labels describe the plants as growing wild, in the grass under the trees. Meise Botanic Garden holds three sheets of the gathering, BR0000023200180, BR0000027568590V and BR0000027568606V.[1][2][3]
Collection and locality
Two of the sheets carry Vermoesen's own slips, in Dutch. One reads Cannabis sativa ♂, wild groeiend - in het gras, onder de boomen (growing wild, in the grass, under the trees) and Pusa, 4 Juli 1911, with the printed label Herbarium Dr KAM. VERMOESEN and the words Statie Pusa (Pusa station).[4] The other reads Cannabis sativa ♀, wild groeiend, onder de boomen, in het gras and Pusa 4 Juli 1911.[5] The third sheet has a short slip, Cannabis sativa ♂ and Pusa 4-7-11., and a printed label of the herbarium of the Institut Carnoy of the University of Louvain filled in with the same name, date and place and the collector Dr.Kam.VERMOESEN.[6]
Meise's catalogue gives the collector as F.M.C. Vermoesen and the date as 4 July 1911 for all three sheets.[7][2]
Specimen and identification
The sheets hold a slender male stem (BR0000023200180), several long male stems with narrow leaflets (BR0000027568590V) and a dense mass of female stems (BR0000027568606V).[6][4][5] The labels and the catalogue name the plants Cannabis sativa L.[7] A printed slip on BR0000023200180 records that leaf tissue was removed for DNA for the project Population dynamics in Cannabaceae by Christopher J. Grassa of the Harvard University Herbaria on 3 July 2018.[6]
