1972 UMS Afghanistan Af A Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Afghanistan. It is known from sixty-one herbarium sheets gathered between 31 July and 1 August 1972 in the National Institute of Mental Health Cannabis Garden of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, by Richard Evans Schultes, Timothy Plowman and T. E. Lockwood. The labels carry the lot code Af A, in several spellings, and most call it the first seed lot. The sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1]

Seed lot

Forty-seven of the sixty-one labels call the seed the Afghan first seed lot, with the code written Af A, af A, AF a, af a or AF A,[1] and one reads first seed sample.[2] Twelve labels give the same code but read Afghanistan, second seed lot,[3] and the label of sheet 00947916 reads AF a - Afghanistan, first seed lot, first generation.[4] None gives a planting date. The labels of plants 52 A, 52 B, 52 C, 52 D and 52 K (one of its two sheets) give the plant's height, from 7 to 12 feet, and most say whether it showed anthocyanin; Harvard records 52 A and 52 K as male and 52 B, 52 C and 52 D as female.[1] That season the garden also grew Af A1 (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720001-R1), whose labels call it the first seed lot, first generation, and Af B (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720002), the second seed lot. M. W. Quimby had grown Afghan seed at the university in 1971 under the codes af-b (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019710001) and af-c17 (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019710002).

Grow-out

The garden lay on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The sheets of this lot carry forty-nine plant numbers, each the figure 52 followed by one or two letters for the plant.[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[5] Schultes and his co-authors later wrote that their collections and studies in the extensive Mississippi plantation and elsewhere had shown that the characters of growth habit in cannabis seemed to be genetically stable.[6]: 356

Specimens and identification

Ernest Small determined the sixty-one sheets as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica; Harvard dates the determinations 16 February 1976 (forty-nine), 16 March 1976 (eleven) and 16 February 1986 (one).[1] Harvard files fifty of the sheets under that name and eleven under Cannabis Linnaeus, giving the subspecies as the current name.[7] For seven of the sheets Harvard records the original label name Cannabis sp.[1]
