Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on sixty-one herbarium sheets of plants grown in Mississippi from seed whose labels give Afghanistan as its origin. They show that seed said to be Afghan was grown there; they do not show where in Afghanistan the seed was gathered, who supplied it or how it reached the university. No surviving seed of the lot has been traced. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
Identifier
The identifier UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence.
UMSstands for the University of Mississippi, which grew the lot.AFGis the ISO code for Afghanistan, the recorded seed origin.UNK: no province is recorded.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is unknown. - Year 1972 is the year of the earliest dated sheet of the lot. The seed had reached the university by then; the year is not a collection date.
Lineage
Most labels call Af A the first seed lot and none gives it a generation, so the sourcing type is Unknown provenance. The Af A1 labels read first seed lot, first generation, so Af A1 takes this identifier with the suffix -R1 and Af A as its parent. The labels do not say whether the 1972 plants of Af A grew from seed as received or from seed of an earlier planting.
Twelve sheets, of plants 52 E to 52 K, give the code Af A but read second seed lot, the words of Af B (UMS-AFG-UNK-0019720002). One sheet, 00947916 (plant 52 L), gives the code AF a but reads first seed lot, first generation, the words of Af A1. All thirteen are placed under Af A, the code written on them. Every sheet numbered 52 carries the code Af A, and every sheet coded Af B is numbered 53; the labels do not show which part of each reading is in error.
The university's history names Afghanistan among the origins of the seed sown in 1968. No label or source read so far ties that seed to this lot, or says when or where in Afghanistan the seed was gathered.
Location and georeferencing
The country field gives the recorded seed origin, Afghanistan, not the place where the plants grew. The grow-out at University, Mississippi, is stated in the article. No coordinate is given and the map is off: a point in Mississippi would misplace Afghan seed, and no place in Afghanistan is recorded.
Dates
The collection date is left empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. The sheets are dated 31 July to 1 August 1972, a range across two months, so the sample harvest date is stored as the year. The labels give no planting date.
Plant numbers
Each numbered 1972 sheet of the lot carries a number of the form 52 CC: a figure shared by every numbered sheet of the lot (52), then one or two letters for the plant. The figure may be a plot or row number, but no label says so, and the article does not call it one.
- Thirteen plant numbers have two sheets each: 52 A, 52 C, 52 E, 52 F, 52 G, 52 H, 52 J, 52 K, 52 MM, 52 N, 52 S, 52 kk and 52 ll.
- The two sheets of plant 52 K disagree: 00979266 (52K) reads first seed lot and gives a height, 00449679 (52 K) reads second seed lot.
- Harvard transcribes some letters in capitals (52 CC, 52 MM) and some in lower case (52 aa, 52 kk), and one number as 52 qDD. The page reports the numbers as transcribed and does not say whether 52 AA and 52 aa are one plant.
Label reading
The sheets have not been seen. The label text above is Harvard's transcription in its specimen index (read on 12 October 2026), where the lot code is in the remarks field. Harvard has published no image of any sheet of the lot.
- Harvard transcribes the code as AF A, AF a, Af A, af A and af a; the page writes Af A.
- The collector field lists the three collectors as Harvard credits them. T. E. Lockwood is Tommie Earl Lockwood (1941–1975) in Harvard's botanist index.
- For seven sheets (00979264, 00979265, 00979263, 00979261, 00979262, 00979260 and 00979266) Harvard gives the label text in its annotation field, not the remarks field, and for 00947808 in its habitat field.
- Harvard writes the accession number of seven sheets with the prefix doubled (ECON ECON 35017); the table gives the numbers as transcribed.
- Harvard dates Small's determination of 00947918 16 February 1986, ten years after the others in the series. The page reports the date as transcribed.
