South Tripura is a landrace cannabis appellation in the Tripura Hills growing area of the Indo-Burman Range, in South Tripura District of Tripura, in north-east India, on the state's border with Bangladesh. The police, the Border Security Force and forest officials have destroyed cannabis under the PR Bari police station in Belonia: in November and December 2023, the second time at Hataliya, and in the forest near Monaipathar in December 2024.[1][2][3]
Geography
South Tripura District covers 1,514.322 km² and has 204.487 km of international border with Bangladesh. It has three subdivisions, Belonia, Santirbazar and Sabroom, and eight rural development blocks, and farming is the main occupation of its people.[4] The present district was formed when the old South Tripura District, with its headquarters at Udaipur, was divided into South Tripura, with its headquarters at Belonia, and Gomati District; the new district was inaugurated on 6 January 2012.[4][5]
History
The Indian Hemp Drugs Commission of 1893–94 heard several witnesses on cultivation in Hill Tippera, the princely state of Tripura. It found the cultivation to be "of the ruder sort, the seed of the wild plant being often used"; a local officer put the crop at a few seers, and the state's memorandum said that hemp was not cultivated there.[6]
Cultivation
On 20 November 2023 the PR Bari police, the 69th Battalion of the Border Security Force and forest department personnel from Rajnagar destroyed more than 6,000 premature cannabis saplings.[1] In December 2023 about 18,000 plants were cut, uprooted and burnt in the area of Hataliya, under the same police station, clearing about 4.5 acres (1.8 ha).[2] In December 2024 the Border Security Force, the police and forest officials destroyed about 32,000 saplings in a forested area near Monaipathar, under the PR Bari police station in Belonia; the operation targeted remote areas commonly used for the crop.[3] In the first days of January 2026, a police official said, several lakh plants were also destroyed in other districts, including South Tripura and Khowai, over the same days as the large operations in Sepahijala.[7]
