Lan Mát is a historical cannabis growing area in northern Vietnam, known from two herbarium sheets of cultivated plants that the missionary Henri François Bon collected there in 1883 and 1884. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds both sheets, and its printed labels head Bon's collections Plantes du Tonkin méridional, plants of southern Tonkin.[1][2]
Herbarium sheets
Bon gathered the first plant, a male, on 10 May 1883 and numbered it 2113. His label reads Lan Mát, 10 Maii 1883. (Cult.), where (Cult.) marks a cultivated plant, and names it Gai = Cannabis.[1] The ethnobotanist Marie Alexandrine Martin gives gai for the Vietnamese name of the grass-cloth plant, and gai ändö, the Indian grass-cloth plant, for an older Vietnamese name of cannabis.[3]
Bon's second sheet from Lan Mát is dated 17 June 1884 and marked Cannabis sativa (cult.).[2] The two gatherings are the accessions Bon 2113 (1883) and Bon s.n., Lan Mát (1884).
