Discussion

Why the appellation is on the map

  • Press reports name cannabis destroyed inside the present district, all under the PR Bari police station:
    • Tripura Times (20 November 2023): more than 6,000 premature saplings, with the 69th Battalion of the Border Security Force and forest personnel from Rajnagar. The readable opening of the report names no village; the news item names the site Ghosh Khamar, which the article does not use.
    • Northeast Live (17 December 2023): about 18,000 plants on about 4.5 acres in the area of Hataliya, "in South Tripura district".
    • Northeast Today (9 December 2024): about 32,000 saplings in a forested area near Monaipathar, "under PS PR Bari in Bilonia, South Tripura".
  • An IANS report of January 2026 (Nagaland Post, The Sentinel) quotes a police official naming South Tripura among the districts where several lakh plants were destroyed in the first days of January 2026, without sites.
  • The sources report the cultivation by district and police station, so the district is the unit.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy: the present South Tripura District (Belonia, Santirbazar and Sabroom subdivisions), from the OpenStreetMap administrative relation for the district. The district administration gives the area as 1,514.322 km²; the OpenStreetMap outline measures about 1,400 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • Every reported site is under the PR Bari police station. No source read names cultivation in the Santirbazar or Sabroom subdivisions.

Growing status

The status is Active: plants are reported destroyed in November and December 2023, December 2024 and January 2026. No source read says that growing in the district has ended.

Sources not used

  • Tripura Times reports older than 30 days are behind a paywall; only the opening of the 20 November 2023 report could be read, and the article uses only what that opening says.
  • The state police's own list of operations (police.tripura.gov.in) could not be reached.

Page type

The page was created as the growing area South Tripura. It became an appellation of the Tripura Hills growing area when that area was drawn on the whole state of Tripura; its border, sources and news items are unchanged.
