Roxburgh s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from the herbarium of William Roxburgh, from India. Two sheets carry the same slip, which names the plant and gives it the name Bhang, marked Hind. Meise Botanic Garden holds one as BR0000023200302[1] and the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo the other as O-V-2164529.[2]
Labels
The slip on the Meise sheet reads ♂, Cannabis sativa. Linn., —— indica. Lamarck., Leaves often alternate, tho more generally opposite. and Bhang. Hind.[3] A printed label of the herbarium of Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, filled in by hand, adds Herbar. Roxburghii., from Roxburgh's herbarium. The Oslo slip has the same wording, in what appears to be the same hand, and the word India in another hand.[4] Neither slip gives a place, a date or a number.
Meise's catalogue gives the collector as Roxburgh and the locality as [Bhang Hind].[5]
Specimen and identification
Each sheet carries one leafy stem, male by the slip's ♂. At Meise the plant shares its sheet with a plant of the Karelin and Kirilov issue of 1840, number 1043, catalogued as BR0000023200296; that plant is a duplicate of Karelin & Kirilov 1043 (1840). A printed slip records that leaf tissue was removed from the sheet for DNA for the project Population dynamics in Cannabaceae by Christopher J. Grassa of the Harvard University Herbaria on 2 July 2018.[3] The slip names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn. and, as a second name, Cannabis indica Lamarck; the catalogues name it Cannabis sativa L.[5]
