Karelin & Kirilov 1043 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from the journey of G. S. Karelin and Kirilov in 1840, issued with a printed label that gives two habitats: meadows by the Irtysh, where it was frequent, and the sands of the desert at lake Noor-Saissan, today's Zaysan, in eastern Kazakhstan. The New York Botanical Garden holds one sheet of the issue as 01414437,[1] and the Moscow University Herbarium another as MW0818727.[2]
Collection and locality
The printed label reads 1043. Cannabis sativa L. In pratensibus ad fl. Irtysch frequens; nec non in deserti Soongoro-Kirghisici arenosis ad lacum Noor-Saissan. leg. Karelin et Kiriloff a. 1840. Soc. Imp. Nat. Cur. Mosqu. (Frequent in meadows by the river Irtysh; and also in the sands of the Soongoro-Kirghiz desert at lake Noor-Saissan. Collected by Karelin and Kirilov in 1840. Imperial Society of Naturalists of Moscow).[3] The label is printed for the whole issue of number 1043 and does not say which of the two habitats this specimen came from. The catalogue names G. S. Karelin as the collector, gives the number and the year, and splits the printed text into habitat and locality.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a single dense, plume-like top with many narrow leaves, with the stamp of the Torrey Herbarium.[3] The printed label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav.; the catalogue files it as Cannabis sativa var. spontanea Vavilov.[3][1]
Second sheet
The Moscow University Herbarium holds a second sheet of number 1043, MW0818727, on a mount headed Herbarium Horti Botanici Universitatis Mosquensis (herbarium of the botanic garden of Moscow University), with several dense, leafy tops strapped across it. It carries the same printed label as the New York sheet, with the same number and text, and a typed slip of Small's from August 1975 that redetermines it, as on the New York sheet, as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav.[4] The catalogue gives no collector, date or locality for it and files it under Kazakhstan.[2] The printed label is the same for every sheet of the issue, so neither sheet says from which of the two habitats it came.
