The Pharmacopoeia of the United States of America, fifth decennial revision, is the edition of the American pharmacopoeia prepared by the National Convention for Revising the Pharmacopoeia, which met at Washington in May 1870. It was published at Philadelphia by J. B. Lippincott and Co. in 1873.[1]: title page, proceedings It lists two drugs of hemp, American hemp and Indian hemp, and three preparations: an extract of Indian hemp, an extract of American hemp and a tincture of hemp made from the Indian extract.[1]: 23, 135, 303
The convention
The convention's delegates came from medical and pharmacy colleges, medical societies and the War and Navy Departments. The copyright was entered in 1872 by Joseph Carson, chairman of the committee of revision and publication.[1]: title page verso, proceedings The committee's preface reports that the extract of hemp had been "transferred from the primary list to the preparations".[1]: preface Among the preparations dismissed from the pharmacopoeia was the purified extract of hemp, Extractum Cannabis Purificatum.[1]: 344 The extract's Latin name was changed from Extractum Cannabis, "Extract of Hemp", to Extractum Cannabis Indicae, "Extract of Indian Hemp".[1]: 350
Hemp in the pharmacopoeia
"Cannabis Americana. American Hemp" is "The flowering tops of Cannabis sativa, cultivated in North America". "Cannabis Indica. Indian Hemp" is "The flowering tops of the female plant of Cannabis sativa, variety Indica".[1]: 23
For the extract of Indian hemp, twelve troyounces of the hemp in moderately fine powder are moistened with alcohol, packed in a conical percolator and left for four days in a moderately warm place; alcohol is then poured on until two pints of tincture have passed or the hemp is exhausted, and the tincture is evaporated by a water bath "to the proper consistence". The extract of American hemp, on the same page, starts from twelve troyounces of American hemp.[1]: 135 The tincture, Tinctura Cannabis, "Tincture of Hemp", is 360 grains of the extract of Indian hemp dissolved in a pint of alcohol and filtered through paper.[1]: 303
