Pasquier s.n., Maison-Carrée is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa credited to R. Pasquier and dated 13 June 1942. Its locality reads Institut Agricole de Maison-Carrée près d'Alger, de graines de Sahara and its event note reads Cultivé en serre ombragée, so the plant was raised under shaded glass at the agricultural institute at Maison-Carrée, now El Harrach near Algiers, from seed brought out of the Sahara. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06780079.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731718383.[2]
Collection and locality
The locality is transcribed as Institut Agricole de Maison-Carrée près d'Alger, de graines de Sahara and the event note as Cultivé en serre ombragée.[1][2] The date is carried as a full day, 13 June 1942. No altitude or collection number is carried.
Two statements sit in that locality. The growing place is the institute at Maison-Carrée, a town at the mouth of the Oued El Harrach now within Algiers and known as El Harrach, in Algiers Province.[3] The seed source is the Sahara, named as a region and not as a place. The plant on the sheet therefore stands for Saharan material grown on the coast, not for a Saharan stand.
Because the plant was raised under glass and not gathered where it grew, the geography in the infobox is the growing site. The seed's Saharan origin is recorded here and on the accession's talk page and not in a location field.
Specimen and identification
The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
Three other sheets in the Algerian series state cultivation on the label: Durando s.n., Sig (1850), Barat s.n., Sig (1850) and Anon. s.n., Guémar (1858). This one states it under glass, which makes it an experimental growing and not a field crop.
