Barat s.n., Sig is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa dated 1850, catalogued under the name Barat. Its label reads Originaire de l'Orient and Cultivé à l'Union du Sig près Oran, so the sheet states both cultivation at Sig in western Algeria and a claim about where the stock came from. The name Barat comes from a herbarium stamp. The label is in the same hand as the label of the Durando sheet of the same year and carries the same signature. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06780078.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731738640.[2]
Collection and locality
The label is written in one hand on grey-blue paper. It reads Cannabis sativa Linn., Le chanvre., Originaire de l'Orient., Cultivé à l'Union du Sig près Oran. and 1850., with a signature at the foot.[3] The catalogue transcribes the locality and the origin note in the same words.[1][2] The locality states cultivation. The origin note says the plant came from the East, without naming a place, a supplier or a date of introduction.
The label gives the year alone. The catalogue holds it as a span from 1 January to 31 December 1850, the form this catalogue uses where only a year is known.[2] No habitat, altitude or collection number is carried.
Sig lies in Mascara Province, east of Oran.[4] A second sheet of the same year and the same establishment, Durando s.n., Sig (1850), gives its locality as Cultivé à l'Union agricole du Sig and is dated to the summer, été 1850.[5][6]
Collector and provenance
The museum's printed label on the sheet, HERB. MUS. PARIS., carries no manuscript and is stamped Herbier - BARAT.[3] The stamp names a herbarium, the herbarium of Barat. The catalogue's collector, Barat, matches it.[2]
The signature on the field label is the one on the label of the Durando sheet, which the catalogue gives as Durando. The two labels are in the same hand.[3][5] The collector is taken from the signature.
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds two stems fixed by paper strips, the shorter with its roots. The label names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn.[3] The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
