Durando s.n., Sig is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa credited to Gaetano Durando and gathered in 1850. Its locality reads Cultivé à l'Union agricole du Sig, which places the plant under cultivation at Sig in western Algeria. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06886052.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731718630.[2]
Collection and locality
The label is written on blue paper in one hand. It reads Cannabis sativa L., Originaire de l'Orient., Cultivé à l'Union agricole du Sig, and été 1850. and is signed Durando. A folded paper on the sheet repeats Été 1850.[3] The catalogue transcribes the locality in the same words.[1][2] The wording states cultivation and not mere presence. It also says the plant came from the East, without naming a place, a supplier or a date of introduction. No habitat, altitude or collection number is given.
The label dates the gathering only to the summer of 1850, été 1850.[3] The catalogue holds the date as a span from 21 June to 22 September 1850,[2] the bounds of that season; neither day is written on the sheet.
Sig lies in Mascara Province, east of Oran.[4] A second sheet of the same year, Barat s.n., Sig (1850), gives its locality as Cultivé à l'Union du Sig près Oran.[5] Its label is written in the same hand as this one and carries the same signature.[6]
Gaetano Durando lived from 1811 to 1892, so a gathering of 1850 falls inside his working life.[7] The curatorial label of the Bullemont herbarium, which holds the Dukerley sheet in this batch, names G.L. Durando among the botanists whose material reached that collection.[8]
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds a tall, branched, leafy stem. The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. The museum's printed label, Herbarium Musei Parisiensis, carries no manuscript.[3] The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
