NACOC reports cannabis processed into toffees and soft drinks sold to children in five Volta districts

Worlanyo Fianu, Volta regional commander of Ghana's Narcotics Control Commission, told The Mirror that raw cannabis is being processed into toffees and soft drinks and sold to children, some as young as ten, and that the practice is most evident in the Hohoe and Kpando municipalities and the North Dayi, South Dayi and Afadzato South districts. He said the regional syndicate was selling into Togo, Benin, Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa, called for closer collaboration between security agencies, and asked parents to watch for changes in behaviour, noting that consumption through sweets and drinks leaves none of the usual signs. He also said students in some boarding schools were lacing shito with granulated cannabis and offering meals so prepared to schoolmates. The Mirror's own investigation reported that cannabis seed is being used as poultry feed, that sheep graze on cannabis plantations and that growers mix cannabis with charcoal before moving it to urban centres. The report notes that about 60 police officers from Ho raided forest at Peki-Dzake in South Dayi District in July 2026 and destroyed two cannabis plantations covering about eight acres in total.
