Kalamchoura Police and BSF destroy 95,500 ganja plants across four localities of Sonamura

On Thursday 30 January 2025, a joint operation by the Border Security Force, Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles and Forest Department officials destroyed approximately 95,500 mature cannabis plants in the general area of Woangcherra, Harihardola, Uttar Manaipathar and South Kalamchoura in Sonamura sub-division, Sepahijala district. Officials estimated the destroyed crop at approximately ₹1.43 crore. The South Kalamchoura portion of the day's operation, conducted from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, destroyed approximately 40,000 mature cannabis plants across four plots covering 15 acres at South Kalamchoura Baidar Dongo, Artaki Mora and Hasher Dongo, and resulted in arrests of several cannabis cultivators at the scene. The South Kalamchoura sub-operation was led by Kalamchoura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nadu Gopal Deb with Sub-Inspector Biswajit Debbarma and Inspector Bijendra Singh of the 49 Battalion BSF. Officials told reporters that the cannabis was at mature stage and capable of supplying large quantities of drugs, and that the eradication problem could not be resolved by legal measures alone but required social awareness and community engagement.
